The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a hyper-awareness of personal safety and the mechanics of spreading disease. According to health experts, to keep yourself safe from contraction, it is recommended to stay in your home and only leave for essential errands (like to the grocery store or pharmacy). When you are in public, you should be wearing a cloth mask, stay at least six feet away from anyone else, and you should not touch your face under any circumstance. Additionally, you should wash and sanitize your hands regularly, along with washing and sanitizing shared surfaces.
Foodservice personnel are considered essential workers during this time and expected to report to work. It is reasonable to assume, then, that they would have sufficient sanitizer, masks, and soap to keep themselves as safe as possible. Unfortunately, that has not been the case, and in response, fast-food workers in Los Angeles and San Francisco areas have chosen to strike.
This movement began after two McDonald’s employees tested positive for COVID-19, and the location was shut down for two weeks. The store workers demand full pay during this involuntary quarantine and improved safety measures once they return to work. Workers servicing Burger King, Taco Bell, Subway, Dominos, El Pollo Loco, and Popeyes have also joined the strike.
If you or a loved one are on the front lines as an essential food service worker, stand up for your rights to be protected during this frightening time.
Our legal team is ready and waiting to represent anyone who believes they are being exploited or put in harm’s way while on the job. Without food service workers, everyone self-quarantining at home would be in a challenging position.
We need food service workers to stay on the job and to stay safe. The failure of these large chains to adequately protect such valuable resources is abhorrent.
