Worker exploitation is one of those insidious things that most employees do not realize is happening until it is too late. Most workers do their best to perform on the job. They are alright with temporarily working long hours and wearing multiple hats in the name of the large goal, or in looking good in front of their bosses. But while occasionally going above and beyond is generally considered good form as an employee, it is when all of that extra work becomes mandatory that things can get messy.
In case you are not sure of where you stand, here are three signs you are being exploited by your employer:
- You are not compensated for extra work. If you are expected to regularly work more than 40 hours, or are expected to add someone else’s job duties to your own, you should be compensated monetarily. Not paying appropriately for extra work is a common way that employers exploit their workforce – getting more out of them than they are paying for.
- Your time off is not respected. If your request for paid time off, sick leave, and considerations for emergencies are not honored by your employer, then you are definitely being treated unfairly and may even be experiencing exploitation. Employment is a two way street. You deserve just as much respect as you bestow upon your employer. Failure to recognize time off is a disrespectful practice.
- Others getting credit for your work or ideas. You deserve to be recognized for the work that you do. If you regularly see other people taking credit and receiving accolades, then you are being exploited for your labor.
